Where We Be
Kleine Scheidegg, Switzerland
Kleine Scheidegg is a high mountain pass
between Eiger and Lauberhorn peaks with killer
views in all directions. It connects Grindelwald
with Lauterbrunnen and is one of THE things to
do in the Jungfrau region. Hikes radiate out
from here in all directions. We had originally
planned to hike the trail down to Grindelwald,
but when we started down it we realized we
were heading away from the best views of the
“big three,” Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau. So
instead we decided to head UP the mountain to
the Eiger Glacier, more for the views than the
glacier itself. This turned out to be a great
choice. We got fantastic up-close looks at the
snow-capped mountains and got away from the
crowds at the train station at Kleine Scheidegg,
which was a bit too busy for our taste. When the
clouds started building, we headed down the
valley towards Wengen, where the sun was still
shining. The stretch of trail to Wengenalp was
particularly pretty. The town of Wengen itself is
worth a visit -- and could serve as a great base.
Our fine views lasted through the afternoon, but the clouds were already making their comeback
Between the train stations of Wengenalp and Wengen, the terrain became greener and we left the snowy mountains behind
Looking down on Wengen from on high -- what a beautiful setting!
We really enjoyed Wengen, perched on its plateau above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. It would make a great (but possibly expensive) base in the area.
The center of Wengen has a convenient Coop for groceries and a sociable central square. Note
the steep snow fences high above town -- in winter Wengen is very much in the avalanche zone.
Some artistic soul turned this big pile of kindling in Wengen into a perch for a flower pot
This is the view looking towards Grindelwald. Our initial idea had been to hike down to Grindelwald, but when we got there we had a better idea.
This is Kleine Scheidegg, the high mountain pass between Eiger and Lauberhorn Peaks. In one direction is Lauterbrunnen and in the other Grindelwald.
We decided to head UP towards Eiger Mountain and Eiger Glacier. This turned out to be a great choice, offering more dramatic high-mountain views.
Every once in awhile a train would pass, filled with sightseers enjoying the day
It just doesn't get any better than this -- a sunny day in the highest mountains of Switzerland
We got fantastic up-close looks at the snow-capped peaks
As the clouds began to build, we hiked down towards Wengenalp (the sunshine on that plateau beckoned to us)
The train ride between Wengen, Wengenalp, and Kleine Scheidegg is gorgeous in its own right
Close-up of a glacier tumbling down the mountain
As we made our way up the steep tracks near Wengen, we got beautiful views looking back down the Lauterbrunnen Valley
Kleine Scheidegg offers a spectacular day of hiking and mountain sightseeing
