In July 2023 we flew to Prague and began an ambitious 35-day journey to see Eastern Europe primarily by train. Our itinerary was as follows:
Prague, Czechia (4 nt)
Salzburg, Austria (5 nt)
Vienna, Austria (4 nt)
Bratislava, Slovakia (2 nt)
Budapest, Hungary (3 nt)
Krakow, Poland (3 nt)
Warsaw, Poland (3 nt)
Vilnius, Lithuania (3 nt)
Riga, Latvia (3 nt)
Tallinn, Estonia (3 nt)
Helsinki, Finland (2 nt)
All of the countries listed above were new for us except Austria. In fact, Vienna was the only city we had seen before out of the entire lot -- so we covered a lot of new ground on this trip.
We traveled mostly by train but also by bus as we reached the Baltic countries (since train options were limited). The final leg to Helsinki was by ferry. Instead of a Eurail Pass, we relied on point-to-point train tickets between cities -- a much cheaper option as per seat61.com, an excellent resource for train travel throughout Europe. Lodging and transport were all booked well in advance, so this was the opposite of winging it -- but we enjoyed the peace of mind of having our travel plans in place.
We averaged 3 nights per destination but were glad for the extra nights in Salzburg & Vienna. Two nights in Bratislava & Helsinki felt about right.
