Where We Be
This simple church stands atop the Mount of Beatitudes in a beautiful setting
Mount of Beatitudes, Israel
The Mount of Beatitudes is a small hill located
on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Tradition says this is the spot where Jesus
delivered his Sermon on the Mount, which
includes both the Lord's Prayer and the eight
beatitudes (e.g., "Blessed are the merciful, for
they shall obtain mercy"). The hilltop setting
offers lovely views down to the Sea of Galilee,
which is called a sea out of tradition but is
actually a large lake. A simple church with a
black dome stands as a marker atop the hill.
The floor plan is octagonal, mirroring the eight
beatitudes. The natural setting makes it easy to
envision this as the place where Jesus fed the
multitudes by multiplying the loaves and fishes,
and where he inspired his followers to "Do unto
others as you would have them do unto you."

The church's octagonal floor plan mirrors the eight beatitudes themselves
These flowering shrubs were in full bloom when we visited in May, making the view even prettier
A simple mosaic reminds visitors that this was also the site where Jesus fed the multitudes by multiplying the loaves and fishes
Jesus' ministry centered around the Sea of Galilee, so we think it's pretty special to be here
Each  window contains a beatitude in Latin
Having been raised Christian, these sites really resonate with us
The terrace behind the church offers a fine view down to the Sea of Galilee
