Where We Be
This was the specific route we took. We started at Guatemala City airport (GUA) and finished at
Belize International airport (BZE). We used a number of different companies for shared shuttles
(e.g., vans or small buses) between destinations in Guatemala. Transport was cheap but typically
crowded and uncomfortable. We primarily used BZ Shuttle in Belize which was expensive but private
and comfortable. We used Belize Express for ferry transport to Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
Note two very long travel days: Lake Atitlan (Panajachel) to Semuc Champey at 10+ hours, and
Semuc Champey to Flores at 8 hours. But if you want to see Semuc Champey then the only real
option is to endure the long shuttle since public air transport is nonexistent. If you're okay with
skipping Semuc Champey, then you can affordably fly between Guatemala City and Flores.
This was our first visit to both Guatemala and Belize. We flew into Guatemala City and out of
Belize City. If you're willing to endure long, bumpy roads, it's easy to explore these two countries
together using public transport (e.g., shared shuttles). We met many travelers who extended their
travels before and after by including Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, etc. into their itineraries.
