Where We Be
Our Australia Itinerary
This was one of the most logistically complex
trip I've planned
because of the combination of
domestic flights and separate car rentals in
different parts of the country
. Australia is so big
that it's easiest to fly between destinations,
especially if you want to see a lot of the country
in a relatively s
hort amount of time (e.g., 6 or 7
weeks). This was the way we decided to go.

Another way would be to rent or buy a car or
van upon arrival, drive a big loop through the
country, then return to your starting point. This
is much less logistically complex but you would
typically need 3 to 6 months to see Australia
well.

Our approach was to keep the trip short and
rely on domestic flights and car rentals at each
airport. We decided we'd spend 10 nights in
Sydney, then 3 nights thereafter in each major
city we visited, using airport buses to get to the
city center (e.g., without a car). Then we'd take
a bus back to the airport and pick up our one-

week car rental. That gave us 7 days to explore
by car
in each region we visited. The exception:
the Red Centre where we spent 7 nights total
and had a car the whole time. Overall we think
this plan worked quite well once it was in place.
2. Tasmania -- 10 days
1. Sydney -- 10 days
4. Melbourne & Victoria -- 10 days
3. Brisbane & Great Barrier Reef -- 10 days
5. Red Centre -- 7 days
Our overall trip plan worked quite well once we were in
Australia -- but it took a lot of planning ahead of time
