Where We Be
Dolomites, Italy -- Map & Itinerary
We read the advice online to pick two or three
different bases in the Dolomites for a two-week
trip, and we would echo that advice. Each
of our
places
had a different feel to it, and we enjoyed
the variety of scenery this approach provided.
Our Airbnb stay in the mountains above Val di
Funes felt remote and peaceful. Our in-town
Airbnb in Ortisei put us within easy reach of all
the gondolas we could use with t
he Gardena
Card. And our final stay in San Martino di
Castrozza was at a hotel right in the heart of
town, with fine mountain views all around.

We chose to spend 5 nights in Val di Funes, 5
nights in Ortisei (Val Gardena), and 3 nights in
San Martino di Castrozza, with a final night at a
Venice airport hotel before our flight home. Our
car rental covered the entire two-week period
and gave us the freedom to drive to trailheads
and explore further afield than we otherwise
would have (e.g., Cortina d'Ampezzo).
We loved
everything about this trip and
would recommend
a visit to this beautiful part of the world.

Note: If we had to pick a single base for a one-
week trip to the Dolomites, it would be Ortisei.
Combine it with a six-day Gardena Card for full
access to
all the lifts in Val Gardena. Instead of a
r
ental car, you could take a train to Bolzano and
a direct public bus to Ortisei. Buses run up and
down Val Gardena
itself, so a car isn't required.
We traveled from Verona to Venice Airport by bus, met up with our
friends, and used a rental car for the rest of our time in the Dolomites
