Where We Be
View looking back at Ushuaia from Bahia Encerrada
The mountains surrounding Ushuaia are spectacular in springtime (yes, spring is in December here)
At Pizzeria Dieguito, just a few blocks from our Del Bosque Hotel, we
quickly fell in love with their empanadas -- some of the best we've ever had

Pretty cute vision of the end of the world!

Antarctica Trip -- Ushuaia
As we landed in Ushuaia after a three-hour
flight from B.A., the scenery turned stunning.
Ushuaia -- and Patagonia in general -- is such a
beautiful place. The mountains were all snow-
capped in spring, and it was still quite chilly.

This was our second time in Ushuaia, so we
kept things simple. A webpage called “20 Free
Things to do in Ushuaia” offered some good
advice. We started at the tourism office, where
we self-stamped our passports with "Antartida"
stamps (the Argentine word for Antarctica). Just
outside is the Pobladores monument honoring
the first inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego. Across
the street is the "Fin del Mundo" sign and the
Malecon itself -- a long waterfront promenade
where you can view cruise ships and the
surrounding mountains. Heading west along the
Malecon, there's a cool shipwreck (framed by
Chile's Darwin Range) and a big "Ushuaia" sign
with pointy Mt. Olivia in the background. The
endpoint of our walk was Bahia Encerrada, a
shallow bay that the article described as "the
best place for birdwatching in Ushuaia, and only
a 15-minute walk from the tourist office.” Just
across the street from Bahia Encerrada is Plaza
Islas Malvinas with its monument dedicated to
Argentinians killed during the Falklands war.
Gotta get your Antarctica passport stamp at the Ushuaia tourist office!
